“Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the LORD your God and to keep his commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in his ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. (Deuteronomy 30:15-16 NLT)
On the treadmill this morning at the gym I was thinking of things to keep my mind occupied as I counted down the distance. I started thinking about choices. I was thinking about how much every day is affected by choices.
There is much in this life that we do not have control over. We cannot control the weather, the traffic, the price of milk or the actions of others. But we are in total control of our choices. We choose how we respond and how we react to the weather and the price of milk, traffic and even the actions of others.
I was thinking about how many choices I make in a day that have a profound impact on my life and my well being (not to mention the well being of those around me).
My choice to hit the snooze button or get up early to spend some quiet time with God.
My choice to watch TV or scroll through Facebook or to invest time into my children making memories with them.
My choice to be offended and angry with someone or to trust God with the outcome.
I started thinking about all these choices that seem so small, but when they are all added up, the sum of them determine the path of my life.
As I continued on the treadmill, I was reminding my self of the choice I had made to indulge in that extra piece of pie and thinking - I chose that so now I must make myself "pay for my poor choice to eat too much! I must now suffer for my lack of self-control over pumpkin pie and whipped topping!" As soon as this thought came into my mind, I had a bit of a heavy-revy...
What if I didn't take the path of trying to punish myself for the choices I had made that maybe we're not the best???
What if I didn't get angry with myself over past choices that I couldn't change?
What if I simply decided, today I'm going to choose better?
What if I decided today that I am going to make choices that set me up for a better tomorrow?
It would all start with just making one choice that I feel good about... And then another one... Followed by another one... And another....
So as we go about our day, just think about the choice you are about to make.... Take a moment. Give yourself the opportunity to make a choice that will produce a good outcome for your future. We all have to start somewhere. Making that one good choice sets you up for the next good choice. These good choices then set you up for a life that is good!
God has an excellent path for us. We just have to choose to walk on it! I love this scripture because God says - "Here... I'm giving you a choice! But then I'm going to give you the answer, too! CHOOSE LIFE!" It's like He loves us so much, that He doesn't want us to accidentally choose wrong so He tells us which one to pick! Ha! God is so good like that!
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the LORD, you will live long in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” (Deuteronomy 30:19-20 NLT)
It's a beautiful life, yall! Choose to live it!
